Practical experiences with sheep embryo transfer

Practical experiences with sheep embryo transfer

Magyar Allatorvosok Lapja 49(5): 290-294

The objective of this study was to determine whether sheep embryo transfer could successfully be applied under field conditions (in 5 farms) and to compare the efficiency of two different superovulatory (PMSG alone and combined PMSG + FSH) treatments. According to the authors' present experiences, there were no significant differences between the two superovulatory treatments. The average number of corpus lutea (PMSG = 8.7; PMSG + FSH = 8.6) and transferable quality embryos (PMSG = 5.5, PMSG + FSH = 6.2, Tables 1 and 2) did not differ between the two groups. Developmental stage of embryos did not influence the implantation of embryos following transfer (Table 5). One embryo was implanted into each of 276 recipients and 126 became pregnant (45.6%). Two embryos were transferred into each of 58 recipients resulting in 32 pregnancies (55.2%) and 9 recipients lettered twin lambs (28%). The average pregnancy rate was 47% (158/334, Table 6). The intervention resulted a 71% (32/45) lambing rate of donor ewes within one year after this transfer program (Table 7). The authors have been pointed out the role of environmental factors (management, feeding) that could also resulted in differences among the average number of corpus lutea and transferable quality embryos after superovulations.
