Relation of naphthalene acetic acid and 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid-induced growth of wheat coleoptile and IAA metabolism

The synthetic auxins, naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and 2, 4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2, 4-D) induced elongation of wheat coleoptile though to a lesser extent than IAA, the natural auxin. Their relation with the metabolism of IAA was studied. The growth promoting activity of 2, 4-D and NAA remained unchanged when the oxidation of endogenous IAA was blocked by pretreating the coleoptiles with EDTA or a mixture of chlorogenic acid and 2,2'-dipyridyl. The levels of IAA oxidase and peroxidase increased after treatment with 2, 4-D and NAA. The possible interactions between the natural auxin and synthetic auxins are discussed.
