Restricted maximum likelihood method to variance components estimation

The objective of this work was to discuss the restricted maximum likelihood method to variance component estimation in order to understand its theoretical insights and computational jobs to make possible its practical applications in research projects in Animal Breeding. The variance components estimates found by the restricted maximum likelihood method for the linear mixed model with crossed classification, used as a numerical example, were the followings: cxa sigma-beta-2 = 228.52, cxa sigma-alpha-beta-2 = 203.36 and PHI+sigma-2 = 684.70, with ratio in relation to the error variance given by cxa gamma-beta = 1.064 and cxa gamma-alpha-beta = 0.297. The method leads to non-negative estimates for the variance components and the bias which comes from the degree of freedom loss in the estimation of fixed effects of the model is eliminated. Its application in Animal Breeding researches is recommended if one could access some available algorithms and computational facilities.
