Salmonella 3,10:r surface interactions with intestinal epithelial microvilli

Salmonella 3,10:r surface interactions with intestinal epithelial microvilli

Indian Journal of Animal Sciences 62(6): 502-504

Salmonella 3,10:r organisms were introduced into the chicken ileum. Ileal sections were examined 18 hr post-infection employing electron microscopy to study surface interaction of these organisms with the ileal epithelial cell microvilli. The organisms located in the close vicinity of microvilli have large bag-like membrane-bound protrusions. Streaks of some lightly electron-dense material were seen outside these structures suggestive of movement of materials between the Salmonella organisms and the epithelial cell microvilli. Organisms located away from the ileal microvilli did not reveal the presence of such bag-like membrane-bound structures. These structures are presumed to contain Salmonella toxin. These observations on Salmonella 3,10:r organisms are new and have not been previously reported as far as known.
