The social vole species M. brandti shows a highly developed social behaviour, especially parental behaviour. The animals cannot discriminate between own and strange neonates by olfactory and acoustic signals. Reactions of adults to audible distress-calls of juveniles and infanticide behaviour depend on sexual experience and hormonal state of the animals and presence of own litter.
