Studies on the prevalence and economic importance of bovine cysticercosis in Oyo State, Nigeria

Studies on the prevalence and economic importance of bovine cysticercosis in Oyo State, Nigeria

Tropical Veterinarian 11(1-2): 47-55

A survey of the abattoirs in Oyo State of Nigeria showed that 0.23% of the 1,448,927 carcases inspected between 1981 and 1990 had Cysticercus bovis. As a result, 2,429kg of meat worth about 35,362 Nigerian Naira (14,090 US dollars) was estimated to have been condemned. The predilection sites were the tongue, masseter muscle, heart, kidney, gluteal muscle and liver in that order. Over ninety percent of the 2.6% of carcasses with cysticercosis examined in a prospective study (July-December, 1990), had apparently viable cysts, indicating that a large percentage of beef consumers in the State are at the risk of being infected with Taenia saginata.
