Chinese cabbage harvested after heavy rainfall in September 1995 had a lower storage ability compared to Chinese cabbage harvested in September the previous year after a period with lower precipitation before harvest. The storage ability of Chinese cabbage was positively correlated to DM content at harvest. Increasing N-fertilization from 10 to 25 kg N/daa showed a negative effect on DM content and soft-rot at harvest and on brown midribs after storage to February This effect was however, less pronounced than the effect of year. The results from this investigation indicate that the weather conditions prior to harvest may have a great influence on storage ability of Chinese cabbage.
