The establishment of ferns in a semideciduous mesophytic forest of the state of Sao Paulo. 2. Nature of the substrata

A chemical and physical characterization of the substrata of some epiphyte and terrestrial ferns is presented. Substra for the various stages of Microgramma lindbergi (Mett.) Sota, M. squamulosa (Kaulf.) Sota, Polypodium hirsutissimum Raddi, P. pleopeltifolium Raddi, P. polypodioides (L.) Watt. (epiphytes), Adiantopsis radiata (L.) Fee, Polypodium latipes Langsd. et Fisch. and Pteris denticulata Sw. (terrestrial) were studied. The data obtained show that the eight species are calcifugous. The epiphyte species occur in substrata richer in nutrients than the terrestrial. All the species studied presented less of 3000 mgKg-1 of phosphorus in the leaves and stem, in addition to morphological and physiological characteristics related with endurance to the hydric deficit. It was also verified that Polypodium hirsutissimum, P. latipes and P. pleopeltifolium are accumulators of manganese; P. latipes, P. pleopeltifolium and Pteris denticulata are accumulators of aluminium. The organic substrata of the epiphyte species, gametophytes and young sporophytes of terrestrial species present more water retention capacity than the soil. It means that the epiphyte species are subject to conditions of stress less severe than it is frequently noticed.
