The nitrogen problem in water protection areas used for viniculture: Study results of a cooperation model between agriculture and water resources in the water protection area Stomberger Strasse near Bad Kreuznach

Rising nitrate concentrations in the groundwater of eight deep wells in the "Stromberger Strasse" water protection area near Bad Kreuznach, Germany, led to the initiation in 1986 of a program to reduce nitrate pollution of the groundwater of viniculture areas. From 1987 to 1990, soil samples from grape cultivation plots and selected vineyards were analyzed to determine the mineral nitrogen concentration and temporal, vertical, and horizontal variations in the nitrogen dynamics. The effects of the microclimate, soil water content, soil heat flux, cultivation methods, and nutrient requirements of the grapes on the mineral nitrogen budget were also studied. In addition to the important parameters of soil temperature and water content, the cultivation method also had a significant impact on the mineral nitrogen budget. The frequency and type of mechanical soil management as well as the application of compost and straw or urea correspond to the mineral nitrogen dynamics in the soil body. The turfing of every other row of vines as a biological soil management method distinctly reduced the nitrogen leaching processes and consequently reduced the nitrogen release into the groundwater.
