The potential of some tropical maize genotypes as sources of high-yielding inbred lines

Inbreeding depression of some populations may be so severe as to preclude their usefulness. Therefore, a study was conducted to determine the potential of 24 tropical genotypes of maize (Zea mays L.) as sources of highly-yielding inbred lines. Grain yield of the genotypes varied from 2.2 t ha-1 for EV 8430 SR to 6.3 t ha-1 for La Posta C-7, while average inbreeding depression was from -2.38% for 50% tasseling to 52.55% for grain yield. The effect of inbreeding on yield was most severe for Pop 25 SR (71.7%) and least for NLC-W-1 (32.2%). Estimates of A and d(contributions of homozygotes and heterozygotes, respectively) and the ratio of A/d were used to identify the genotypes having high potentials. These estimates revealed that NLC-W-1, NLC-Y, 8505-13, TZPB-SR, EV 8443 SR, LWSRBU and DMR-LSR-Y may be expected to be good sources of high-yielding inbred lines.
