The treatment of dicrocoeliosis in sheep

The treatment of dicrocoeliosis in sheep

Monatshefte fuer Veterinaermedizin 48(11-12): 657-661

Beside fasciolosis dicrocoeliosis is the most frequent trematode infection in indigenous sheep flocks. The mayor dicrocoeliosis areas in Germany are distributed in the southern federal countries. The northeast closed area is situated in the eastern region of Brandenburg. There mostly sheep are affected as final hosts. The compulsery terrestical 3 host life cycle offers only a few possibilities for control measures. Own investigations on testing the dicrocoelicide efficacy of albendazole, luxabendazole and netobimin in a controlled test were carried out on 112 sheep spontaneously infected with D. dendriticum. An efficacy of more than 90% was achieved with albendazole in doses of 15 and 20 mg/kg body weight. Netobimin in a dose of 20 mg/kg body weight led to an efficacy of 89%. Luxabendazole in doses of 7,5 and 10 mg/kg b. w. decreased the average number of flukes only by 47 and 59% respectively. The treatment has to be carried out in the wintertime because of the selective effect of (pro)benzimidazoles on mostly mature flukes. Considering the embryotoxic and teratogenic effects of (pro-)benzimidazoles female sheep are to treat before mating or after lambing.
