Two octoploid strawberry (Fragaria) species from North American latitudes corresponding to the Finnish latitudes were introduced to Finland. F. chiloensis seeds were obtained from Alaska, USA and F. virginiana seeds from Yukon, Canada. In experimental cultivation, carried out since 1970, selected plants were crossed; some variation in several characteristics was observed and recorded. The species are trioecious, comprising unisexual females or males and perfect-flowered hermaphrodites in unequal proportions. The berries varied as to shape, size, colour, sourness, flavor, resistance to diseases, firmness of flesh, attachment to calyx, etc. Special variants had an aroma resembling that of the berries of Rubus arcticus or Fragaria vesca. The strawberries were also planted in the wild over the area of four municipals in the southern and interior areas of Finland; the oldest plantings were made in 1971. In the three planting sites observed, the species still survive, and have spread by means of runners. There are recent observations of spontaneous seedlings. Selections producing attractive berries might be propagated, to be planted on flower meadows and cleared forests both for berries and for decoration.
