A comment on in-group/out-group comparisons for fluctuating asymmetry based on trait values from the left or right sides of an individual

Two methods of comparing in-groups and out-groups for fluctuating asymmetry based on trait values from the left or right sides of an individual are discussed. The approach used by Clarke (1995;146:708-25) may result in an artifact and lead to differences between in-groups and out-groups that do not exist. The method of Soule and Cuzin-Roudy (1982;120:765-86), however, does not suffer from this problem and can still detect an association between instability and trait values under certain circumstances.
