Characterization of the specificities of human blood group H gene-specified a1,2- L-fucosyltransferase toward sulfated/sialylated/fucosylated acceptors: evidence for an inverse relationship between a1,2- L-fucosylation of Gal and a1,6- L-fucosylation of asparagine-linked GlcNAc

The specificities of a cloned blood group H gene-specified a1,2- L-fucosyltransfersae toward different acceptor structures were characterized to shed light on the assembly of complex structures that bear the H determinant. The acceptor structures were sulfated, sialylated, or fucosylated Galb1,3/4GlcNAab- or Galb1,3GalNAca based. Evidence was found for the existence of an inverse relationship between a1,2- L-fucosylation of Gal and a1,6- L-fucosylation of asparagine-linked GlcNAc.
