A study was carried out to investigate the problem of child lifting by wolves in Hazaribagh West, Koderma, and Latehar forest divisions in Bihar State, India. The records of the Forest Department were analyzed, and interviews and a survey were conducted. From April 1993 to April 1995, 80 child casualties occurred and only 20 victims were rescued. The children were taken by wolves mainly during March-August and between 5 P.M. and 7 P.M. Fifty-eight percent of the victims were female, and 89 percent were 3-11 years of age. Recommendations for mitigating human-wolf conflicts are outlined.
