Comparison of multiple with single trait animal models in estimation of breeding values of economic traits of swine

Comparison of multiple with single trait animal models in estimation of breeding values of economic traits of swine

Korean Journal of Animal Science 38(4): 341-346

This study was conducted to compare multiple with single trait animal models in estimation of breeding values of average daily gain, backfat thickness and age at 90kg of swine. The data were obtained from 2,877 heads of Landraces tested at the S. Swine Breeding Farm in Kyunggy Province. The heritabilities used to estimate breeding values of average daily gain, backfat thickness and age at 90kg were 0.29, 0.45 and 0.40, respectively. The correlation between breeding values estimated by multiple traits animal model and by single trait animal model for average daily gain, backfat thickness and age at 90kg were 0.977, 0,996 and 0.996, respectively. The rank correlation of breeding values estimated by multiple traits and single trait animal model for average daily gain, backfat thickness and age at 90kg were 0.975, 0.996 and 0.995, respectively. Single trait animal model can be used availably in case that it is difficult to use multiple traits animal model to estimate breeding value due to large data set, hardship in estimating heritability, unknown genetic correlation and environmental correlation and other reason, single trait animal model can be used.
