Abstract
A 30-kb region surrounding the replication origin in Caulobacter crescentus was investigated. Comparison to the genome sequence of Rickettsia prowazekii revealed a conserved cluster of genes that overlies the established origin of replication in C. crescentus and the supposed origin of replication in R. prowazekii. Moreover, the genes bordering this cluster were found to differ between the 2 organisms. The findings indicated that this conserved gene cluster can be used to identify the origin of replication in other a-protobacteria.
