Correlation of regional cerebral blood flow and change of plasma sodium concentration during genesis and satiation of thirst

A positron emission tomography study of blood flow and brain activation was conducted to identify brain regions sensitive to changes in plasma Na concentration during thirst. Subjects were first brought from a normal osmolar, nonthirsty state to a hyperosmolar, thirsty state by rapid iv infusion of hypertonic saline. Subjects were thereafter allowed to drink to satiation. The results show that the anterior cingulate has an important role in the genesis of thirst.
