A study investigated the cytolytic activity of intraepithelial T cells (IEL) isolated from 2- to 3-month-old mutant mice lacking or having markedly reduced numbers of IEL expressing either T-cell receptor (TCR)-ab (ab-IEL) or TCR-cd (cd-IEL). During the experiment, cd-IEL from b-/- mice failed to display cytolytic activity, whereas cd-IEL from d-/- mice displayed a vigorous cytolytic activity, comparable with that of cd- and ab-IEL isolated from wild-type littermates. Similar TCR-a and TCR-b gene-dependent variability was observed in interferon-c production on polyclonal stimulation of cd-IEL.
