The food habits and dietary quality of Native American women in rural California were examined, together with the relationship between food habits, food intake, and dietary quality in this group. Little is known about the contemporary diets of Native Americans. A total of 48 to 50 women were recruited from each of 4 rural sites located in geographically diverse regions of California. Sixty-one percent of participants had "less adequately nourished" (LAN) diets. Women who had "more adequately nourished" diets were more likely to be enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children than women who were LAN and were more likely to eat more vegetables. The findings support the need for nutrition education, particularly for the LAN group.
