Effect of complications at the time of calving on the reproductive performance and milk yield of high blooded crosses of the German Black and White cattle with bulls of Holstein-Friesian breed and pure thorough bred Holstein-Friesian cows

Data have been analyzed concerning the type of calving with the aim or assessing its effect on the following reproductive performance and milk yield of 244 Holstein-Friesian cows and high blooded crosses between German Black and White cattle with bulls of the Holstein-Friesian breed. The animals were reared in one farm at similar nutrition regime. Results showed that of the animals delivering without problems only 0.54% were culled by necessity up to the 5th day post calving, while after deliveries evaluated as difficult this index was 25.0%. Simultaneously the relative share of culled first calvers, who delivered with complications of various degree, was almost twice higher than that of the mature cows. The increase in degree of complications during calving led to a statistically significant prolongation of 18.0% in the period from calving to first insemination in all cows studied and of 39.1% in first calvers. Along with that was observed a decrease in the share of animals fertilized to the 60th and 80th day post-calving. Disturbances in the normal course of delivery caused a trend toward milk yield reduction during the following lactation. Animals delivering with difficulties produced 15.6 kg less milk butter as compared to cows with normal delivery.
