Effect of steroid pre-treatment on the carbohydrate content of Zea mays plants

Effect of steroid pre-treatment on the carbohydrate content of Zea mays plants

Acta Botanica Indica 23(1): 115-116

ISSN/ISBN: 0379-508X

The effects of steroid hormones (estrone, testosterone, pregnenolone acetate and hydrocortisone) and cholesterol were studied on sugar (acid and water soluble) and starch contents of Zea mays L. cv Ganga-5. Lower concentrations (10-8 and 10-8 M) of hormones increased the carbohydrate content of leaves, hydrocortisone causing the maximum enhancement. When compared with plant growth regulators (IAA, GA-3 and kinetin), steroids were found to be more effective.
