Effects of two weaning ages on the growth of beef calves

In a private farm in Dom Pedrito country, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, was conduct aa experiment to evaluate the effect of two weaning ages - 147 days (W5) and 209 days (W7) - on the growth of two groups of males and females beef calves borned of primiparous cows and raised on improved pastures (Trifolium repens L. cv. Yi; Lotus corniculatus Lam. and Lolium multiflorum Lam). The group W5 with 47 calves had 19 Polled Hereford male calves (PHm); 6 Nelore times Polled Hereford male cross calves (NPHm); 15 Polled Hereford female calves (PHf) and 7 Nelore times Polled Hereford female cross calves (NPHf). The group W7 with 40 calves had 17 PHm, 6 NPHm, 11 PHf and 5 NPHf. The calves from W5 grazed in a sorghum (Sorghum vulgare Pers.) paddock during 15 days after weaning. The data analysed were: autumn live-weight gain of calves (LWA); calves live-weight at 205 days (LW205) and 365 days (LW365) adjusted for calves sex; pregnancy rate (P) and first calving date of heifers (CD). Significative differences (P lt 0,01) between W5 and W7 were determined for LWA (17,93 times 37,58 kg), LW205 (173,69 times 185,34 kg) and LW365 (283,08 times 301,27). There were no differences (P gt 0,05) between calves of different breeds or sex.
