Evidence for the imminent collapse of the Caspian Sea stellate sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus) population is presented. Analyses of the trends in biomass change and exploitation relative to the apparent ability of the Iranian fishery to sustain itself revealed a slight tendency for the size composition of the landings to decrease. This and other evidence may be regarded as a warning signal that the stellate sturgeon resource in the Caspian Sea is overexploited.
