Influence of orchard cultural practices on mineral composition of apple leaves and fruit: III. Influence of a rootstock planting density and fertilising level on leaf mineral content

The experiment was conducted in 1979-1982 on McSpur and McIntosh apple trees aged 5 to 8 years. It aimed to investigate the influence of 3 rootstocks (MM 106, M 7 and M 26), two planting densities and two levels of fertilization (standard and 1.5 of the standard level) on a leaf content of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium. The obtained results show that the influence of the investigated factors was related with varietal traits. Rootstock vigour had a great impact. Dense planting increased phosphorus but decreased leaf magnesium content. The level of nitrogen, potassium and calcium depended greatly on a variety. Higher fertilizing rates increased nitrogen, decreased phosphorus and did not affect potassium and the remaining elements in leaves of both varieties. Abundant rains in June and July of 1981 caused a decline of phosphorus, potassium and magnesium. Leaves from 5-year old trees contained more nitrogen and less phosphorus and potassium than those from older trees.
