Mitigating the relationship between population growth and land degradation

Changes in land use and farm-management practices in the Kabale District of Uganda between 1945 and 1996 were investigated. The purpose of the study was to identify factors that may be intervening to prevent or delay the negative impact of population growth on the environment in this district. A higher proportion of land was being left to fallow in 1996 compared with 1945, and the land allocated for woodlots had more than doubled over this period. Valley land reclaimed from wetlands is now being used for grazing land rather than the marginal land on steep back slopes. Farmers are using fallow, animal manure, household compost, and mulching to increase soil fertility. These changes in land use and farm management may have contributed to the apparent lack of severe land degradation in the area.
