A paper in this issue by Hughes et al. reports a field study on patterns of recruitment, or arrival of new juveniles, and adult abundance of corals on the Great Barrier Reef. Their findings reveal that recruitment rates can vary substantially among locations on the reef, with the variation being greatest at scales of 250-500 km and 0.5-3 km. In addition, variation in recruitment does not match variation in adult abundance, suggesting that other demographic process also vary between locations.
