The type specimens of Alveolites fougti MILNE-EDWARDS and HAIME, 1851, type species of the genus Planalveolites LANG and SMITH 1939 from the Silurian of Gotland, have been traced (coll. de VERNEUIL, Universite Claude Bernard, Sciences de la Terre, Lyon 1) and a lectotype is designated. Additional material from Lusklint, Upper Visby Beds, Lower Wenlock, permits an accurate description of the morphology and structure of the species and completes the sparse data available from STUMM (1967) and LAFUSTE (1984) (new data on the "epitheca", on the bilateral symmetry of the septal ridges on the upper margin of the calice, on the tabulae seen in longitudinal transverse and tangential sections). Increase is lateral, but secondary thickening of the wall often makes it look like intramural. Standard and ultra thin sections ("LFP") from an unfigured fragment of the lectotype show the scutellate microlamellae described by LAFUSTE (1984). logy, and the attribution of all the coralla to P. fougti is discussed. The species assigned to the genus are also discussed.
