Sediment accumulation and Pb burdens in submerged macrophyte beds

The role of lake morphology and submerged macrophyte beds in the accumulation of sediments in the littoral zone of Lake Memphremagog, situated in Quebec and Vermont, was investigated. The wide variety of macrophyte beds and littoral habitat available in this lake allows among-site patterns of sediment accumulation to be assessed as a function of lake morphology and macrophyte bed structure. Stable Pb, a historical marker of lacustrine sediments in southern Quebec, was employed to date the sediments and to calculate the long-term sediment accumulation rates. The results revealed that submerged macrophyte beds serve as major sinks of materials in lakes.
