Single-handing

Single-handing

Oceans 21: 21

The Single-handed Transatlantic Race, which covers 3,000 miles of ocean from Plymouth, England, to Newport, Rhode Island, is viewed by most veteran seafarers as an Olympian test of self-reliance and seamanship. On June 5, 1988, about 100 solo sailors will set off in the latest running of the quadrennial event. One-third of the boats are unlikely to reach their destination. In an excerpt from his book The Race, a participant in the 1984 Single-handed Transatlantic Race describes the challenge of competing in this event.
