The contribution of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways to the serine phosphorylation of STATs (signal transducers and activators of transcription) was investigated. Overall, the data obtained indicate that STAT1 is phosphorylated at Ser-727 by a stress-activated signaling pathway, either via p38 MAPK directly or through an unidentified kinase located downstream of p38 MAPK.
