The legendary lotus

, : The legendary lotus. American Horticulturist 74: 42

The relatively tough, exotically beautiful lotus tends to be underestimated in the West. These mystical plants are given less attention than water lilies, even in water garden catalogues. However, lotuses have a place in the lore of many oriental religions and are still cultivated throughout Asia. Among the charms of lotuses are their huge, "hauntingly aromatic" blossoms that last for 3 days, their interesting leaves and seed pods, and the ease with which they can be grown. Advice on how best to plant these unusual aquatic plants and on how to treat seeds and seedlings is provided.
