In the laboratory, extracts of neem, derris (rotenone), equisetum, ryania, wormwood, garlic, chrysanthemum (pyrethrum) and bitter wood were tested to evaluate their effects on eggs, females and fecundity of the phytophagous mite Tetranychus urticae Koch. All the extracts were used pure or mixed with vegetal oils and soybean lecithin or hydro-alcoholic solution of fat acids. The more effective vegetal products on the phytophagous mite were tested also for their side effects on the predator Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor). On the whole the vegetal extracts tested were more toxic on phytoseiid than on tetranychid females and on both species the neem and derris based extracts were the most effective. For tetranychid females the global toxicity (E = control percentage multiplied by the ratio between treated and untreated females fecundity) reached 50% only with 5% rotenone. On the contrary, for the predator the global toxicity was about 100% with 5% rotenone mixed with vegetal oils and soybean lecithin; 90.12% with 0.4% azadirachtina and 0.9 neem oil mixed with vegetal oils and soybean lecithin; little more than 50% with two other azadirachtina and rotenone based formulations. With the same extracts, the control on tetranychid eggs ranged between 71% and 100%, whereas on predator eggs between 63% and 73%. In T. urticae a significant increase in daily oviposition was observed after the treatment with hydro-alcoholic solution of fat acids, vegetal oils and soybean lecithin, the most part of neem extract, equisetum, ryania and pyrethrum, whereas in N. californicus a significant decrease was registered with some extract of neem and with rotenone. The most promising results were obtained using low concentration of azadirachtina and neem oil that, even if ineffective on adults, caused the total shrivelling of tetranychid eggs, without significantly affecting the phytoseiid survival or fecundity.
