Comprehensive geriatric assessment in elderly cancer patients. Preliminary results from the Italian group of geriatric oncology - GIOGer

Comprehensive geriatric assessment in elderly cancer patients. Preliminary results from the Italian group of geriatric oncology - GIOGer

Rays 24(2 Suppl. ): 53-57, April-June

The aim of this study was to investigate, by means of the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA), physical, psychological and mental disabilities, and to correlate the objective measurements with standard clinical parameters, in a group of elderly patients with cancer admitted in a network of medical centers in Italy, the "Gruppo Italiano di Oncologia Geriatrica" GIOGer. The data herein presented concern the preliminary findings in 363 patients. These patients (54% of whom were females) had an overall median age of 72 years (range: 65-94). Breast cancer (31%) was the most commonly diagnosed tumor, followed by hematological neoplasms (25%) and lung cancer (15%): 31% of these elderly cancer patients had advanced disease stage, 26% had a poor performance status (PS), while a comorbid condition was present in 41%. Limitations in the Activities of Daily Living (ADL), and in the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) were evaluated, the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) was performed and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) was applied. 14% of the patients had limited ADL, 48% limited IADL, 27% had a poor MMSE and 40% had depressive symptoms. Patients aged 75 years or older had higher rates of limitations than those aged between 65 and 74 years. By multivariate analysis, a poor PS and the presence of comorbid conditions were shown to be strong independent determinants of both ADL and IADL disabilities.
