Diversity of phytoplankton of a sewage polluted brackishwater tidal ecosystem

Phytoplankton community of Jagannath canal, an important brackishwater tidal ecosystem of north Sundarbans, West Bengal, India was examined for two years to study the diversity of phytoplankton of the canal at monthly intervals. Sixteen genera of phytoplankton belonging to Chlorophyta (five genera), Bacillariophyta (seven genera), and Cyanophyta (four genera) were recorded from the canal. Phytoplankton counts varied from 47.07 to 89.70 X 105/m3 with the domination of chlorophytes. Both density and diversity of phytoplankton was higher during the monsoon season (March to June) than those of pre-monsoon (November to February) and post-monsoon seasons (July to October). Species diversification of phytoplankton has been discussed in relation to pollution.
