Do fast increasing food conditions promote the midsummer decline of Daphnia galeata?

Field investigations in the highly eutrophic Bautzen Reservoir and flow-through experiments in the laboratory were combined in a study on the mid-summer decline of Daphnia galeata. We tested the hypothesis that the inability of adult Daphnia to reduce the size of their large and dense feeding appendages in response to fast increasing food levels after a clear-water phase enhances adult mortality. Adult survival in the laboratory (predation excluded) drastically decreased exactly at that time when the Daphnia population in Bautzen Reservoir declined. However, enhanced adult mortality was found irrespective of different food conditions offered during the experiments. We conclude that increased mortality of adult daphnids is not a direct effect of their inability to adapt to high seston concentrations.
