Effect of calcium compounds extracted from oyster shell on the occurrence of physiological disorder, pathogenic decay and quality in apple fruits

Preharvest spray of calcium compound extracted from oyster shell (OS-Ca) increased fruit firmness in 'Fuji' and 'Jonagold' at harvest compared to those of untreated ones, but this effect was not confirmed in 'Tsugaru'. There was no difference of soluble solids, acidity in fruits, anthocyanin, and chlorophyll contents in fruit skin. The foliar spray of OS-Ca effectively decreased the occurrence of bitter pit in 'Fuji' and 'Jonagold', and that also effective for the control of cracking and preharvest drop in 'Tsugaru'. The decay by Botryosphaeria dothidea was significantly inhibited by OS-Ca treatment in 'Fuji' and this was more effective against D1-18, highly pathoegnic strain.
