Effect of feeding level of sows during pregnancy on number and weight of piglets at birth and weaning

Effect of feeding level of sows during pregnancy on number and weight of piglets at birth and weaning

Zhivotnov"dni Nauki 36(5-6): 11-16

With the aim to study the effect of two feeding levels of sows during the pregnancy period on the number and weight of piglets at birth and weaning an experiment was carried out with 50 sows fed at two levels during the pregnancy: I group (control) - 2.2 - 2.7 kg/day (upto 80-th day) and II group (experimental) - 1.9 kg/day during the entire period. Feeding level of sows during the pregnancy didn't affect on number and weight of piglets born alive in a litter (8.4 and 8.4; 1.34 and 1.34 kg for I and II group respectively), on number and weight of piglets in the litter at 14-th day (7.96 and 7.84; 3.48 and 3.41 kg respectively) and on the number of weaned piglets (7.72 and 7.60 respectively). Live weight of I group weaned piglets was significantly higher (6.26 kg vs. 5.77 kg) compared to II group ones. It was found significantly higher total and average daily gain for those piglets from the 14-th day to the weaning (at 28 day of age) as well as for the total suckling period.
