Effect of genetic group and non-genetic factors on first lactation performance of different Jersey crossbreds

Effect of genetic group and non-genetic factors on first lactation performance of different Jersey crossbreds

Indian Veterinary Medical Journal 23(4): 259-264

The effect of indigenous breed involved and level of Jersey inheritance were studied on performance for first lactation milk yield, reproduction and production efficiency traits of Jersey X Zebu crossbreds produced by crossing four indigenous breeds viz., Red Sindhi, Sahiwal, Tharparkar and Hariana, along with effect of non-genetic (year of calving, season of calving) factors. The indigenous breed involved in crossbreeding was observed to have definite contribution to crossbred productivity with Jersey X Tharparkar crosses showing best performance followed by Jersey X Red Sindhi, Jersey X Sahiwal and Jersey X Hariana crossbreds for important first lactation production, reproduction and production efficiency traits. The performance of halfbreds was observed either superior or comparable than higher grades in all the crosses irrespective of the indigenous breed involved. The effect of season of calving were mostly non-significant whereas year of calving showed significant differences for yield and production efficiency traits except ADMY/LL with declined performance during the later years.
