Effects of administration of different hormones on corpus luteum accessory formation in heifers

The ability of different hormones administered on day 5 of the estrous cycle to induce the ovulation of the first wave dominant follicle (FWDF) and to form an accessory corpus luteum (CLa) was studied in heifers. One hundred fifty tree (153) crossbred Holstein-Zebu heifers were randomly assigned to four treatments: T1 = control (n=38), T2 = s.c. administration of 500 mg of recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST, n =32), T3 = i.m. administration of 100 mug of GnRH-analog (n =33) and T4 = administration of 3000 UI (1000 UI i.v. and 2000 UI i.m.) of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG, n=50). Transrectal palpation was performed on days 5 and 13 to check original corpus luteum (CLo) and CLa, respectively. CLa formation were 0/38 in T1 (0.00%), 0/32 in T2 (0.00 %), 18/33 in T3 (54.54 %) and 40/50 in T4 (80.00 %). GnRH and hCG induced the formation of CLa (P < 0.05). The present results shown that administration of GnRH-analog or hCG was an efficient method to induce ovulation of the FWDF on day five of the estrous cycle, with consequent formation of an accessory corpus luteum (hCG > GnRH, P < 0.05).
