Effects of adren- and serotoninergic receptors, agonists and antagonists, on the hypothalamic-testicular axis in birds during ontogeny

We investigated the role of the brain catechol- and serotoninergic systems in control over the gonadal function and maturation in 2- and 3-month old cockerels (Gallus domesticus) and in 2-month old quail (Coturnix coturnix j.). Brain neurotransmitters were found to be involved in regulation of the hypothalamic-testicular axis in birds of both species during early postnatal life. It was shown that mostly alpha1- and less alpha2-adrenergic structures take part in the acceleration of maturation. The serotoninergic structures appeared to play role in inhibition of the gonadal function.
