Effects of air pollution on underground vegetation in forest ecosystems of the Kola Peninsula

Air pollution has caused severe damage to underground vegetation, their structure and composition, in subarctic forest ecosystems near the Pechenganikel smelter in the Kola Peninsula, Russia. In soil organic horizons, concentrations of mobile nickel and copper increased, while nitrogen and potassium decreased towards the smelter. Besides direct input of pollutants from atmosphere, soil contamination and nutritional disturbance contributed significantly to the observed vegetation damage.
