Effects of allyl chloride on calcium, phosphorus contents and energy synthesis in nerve cells

Using nerve cells from chicken embryo, the allyl chloride-induced changes in Ca, P, ATP, ADP and AMP contents and succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activities were studied. The results showed that with allyl chloride concentration increased, the percentage content of Ca in nerve cells was increased significantly, however, the contents of P, ATP, ADP, AMP and the activities of SDH were markedly decreased. These suggest that the allyl chloride-induced calcium unhomeostasis in nerve cells be related to inhibition of mitochondrial SDH activity and the decreasing in ATP synthesis, leading to increase in intracellular Ca2+. Inhibition of energy synthesis induced by allyl chloride in nerve cells might be one of the mechanisms of calcium unhomeostasis.
