Effects of kappa-casein and beta-lactoglobulin loci polymorphism, cows' age, stage of lactation and somatic cell count on daily milk yield and milk composition in Polish Black-and-White cattle

The single or combined effects of animal's genotype at kappa-casein (CSN3) and beta-lactoglobulin (LGB) loci were determined on milk production traits in 102 Polish Black-and-White cows. The effects of animal's age (lactation number), lactation stage, and milk somatic cell count (SSC) were assessed and their interactions with a genotype effects estimated. The contribution of fixed (genotype) and random (lactation number and stage, SCC) to the variation in daily milk yield and composition was evaluated. The combined effects of CSN3/LGB genotypes appeared not significantly greater than those of CSN3 or LGB genotypes considered individually. As compared to other factors, the genotype at CSN3 or LGB locus only moderately contributed to the milk production traits studied. In most cases the effect of a genotype did not exceed 10% of the sum of all effects studied. The hierarchy of contribution of all factors (effects) studied on milk production traits may be presented as follows: stage of lactation > lactation number > SCC > CSN3 > CSN3/LGB > LGB.
