From our previous studies, we have suggested that "egg envelope (chorion) hardening-enzyme" (first proposed by Zotin (J. Embriol. Exp. Morph. 6, 546-568 (1958))) in the rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, is transglutaminase (TGase), and that it coexists with its substrate, the unfertilized egg chorion, and forms epsilon-(gamma-glutamyl)lysine cross-links between the chorion proteins.
