Evaluation of hepatic vein and portal vein blood flow in congestive heart failure by Doppler ultrasound

Objective: Examination of hepatic vein and portal vein in congestive heart failure to understand liver congestion and heart function. Methods: Pulsatility ratio (PR) of the portal vein, the portal vein velocity (PV), the portal vein diameter (PD) and hepatic vein diameter (HD) of 93 congestive heart failure patients and 30 control were detected by Doppler ultrasound and compared with the echocardiographic results. Results: Congestive heart failure patients showed reduced clinical heart function, reduced left ventricle systolic and diastolic function, increased HD were good agreeable with reduced portal vein PR. PV was reduced in congestive heart failure patients. Conclusion: Changes of hepatic vein and portal vein by Doppler ultrasound could be used as a reliable adjunctive signs of liver congestion and heart function in congstive heart failure.
