Objective: To study the expression of Fas and Bcl-2 genes in Graves disease (GD) and Hashimoto's disease (HD) and to investigate the relationship between apoptosis and autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD). Methods: Thyroid tissues were obtained by core needle biopsy, SABC immunohistochemical methods were used to examine the expression of Fas and Bcl-2 antigen on thyrocytes in situ. Results: (1) Compared to normal control, the expression of Fas antigen on thyrocytes of both types of AITD patients was increased, the expression of Bcl-2 was also increased in GD, on change of Bcl-2 expression in HD was found. (3)The expression of Fas antigen on thyrocytes of GD was stronger than that of HD, the expression of Bcl-2 in the former was also stronger than that in the later, Compared to Bcl-2, the intensity of expression of Fas antigen in HD was increased, but there was no significant difference between Fas and Bcl-2 in GD. Conclusion: Apoptosis induced by Fas might plays an important role in the pathogenesis of HD, but in GD, the effect of apoptosis induced by Fas might be overcome by Bcl-2.
