Growth characteristics and selection of hybrid poplar clones by disease resistance in the section Aigeiros

To breed superior clones, cross matings were made between selected clones of Populus deltoides(79-IL-01, Lux, AY48, Harvard), P. euramericana(San Martino) and others in 1995. The male(hm2) and female (hf2) heritabilities for height growth were estimated as 0.32 and 0.62, respectively. The superior individuals were selected among the cross combinations at the nursery by their growth characteristics and disease resistance in 1997 and then propagated by cuttings in 1998 and 1999. P. euramericana (Eco28, I-214), P. koreanaXP. nigra var italica, P. nigraXP. maximowiczii and P. albaXP. glandulosa (Clivus) were used as controls. Clonal broad heritability(hc2) for height growth of selected clones was estimated as 0.34. Based on the growth and resistance to disease(leaf rust, brown spot scap and cercospora leaf spot), 97-18(P. deltoides 'Lux'XP. deltoides 'AY48') and 97-19(P. deltoides 'Lux'XP. deltoides 'Harvard') have been selected at the nursery and will be further tested for their adaptability in different regions.
