Image quality of digital rotational panoramic x-ray imaging system with charge-coupled device sensor. Comparisons with conventional analog image

Image quality in digital rotational panoramic radiography using a charge-coupled device sensor was compared with conventional analog radiograph. The panoramic x-ray machine used in this study was a Veraviewepocs (J. Morita Co.), which is available for both digital and analog radiography. For each of them, the central plane and the focal trough were determined visually using a phantom made of steel spheres. The signal detection rates with digital and analog images were compared using aluminum test objects. Scores for the image clarity of 6 anatomical landmarks in panoramic images of a head phantom were also compared. Both phantoms were exposed at a tube current varying from 1 to 9 mA. The central plane and the focal trough in digital and analog radiography were almost identical. The signal detection rates and the scores for image clarity with the digital image increased gradually with the increase in the tube current, whereas those with the analog image increased markedly. The digital image showed significantly higher detection rates below the tube current of 5mA. Above 7mA, the rates of both images became comparable. The digital image also showed higher scores for image clarity below the tube current of 3mA. Above 5mA, higher scores were obtained with the analog image. However, the scores of the digital image were sufficiently high and no significant difference was found in almost all landmarks. Therefore, it can be concluded that a digital image can produce an identical diagnostic accuracy to an analog radiograph, with a half radiation exposure.
