Abstract
The reproduction effectiveness of Caspian sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus) under various hydrological conditions of the Volga River has been analyzed in a long-term study (1966-1997). Based on the catch of Caspian sturgeon larvae migrating from spawning grounds located downstream of the Volgograd hydroelectric plant, the productivity of various parts of volga have been determined. The tendency to a sharp decline of the effectiveness of Caspian sturgeon spawning in the lower Volga River, which began in 1992, may result in the complete loss of a spawning part of the Caspian sturgeon population.
